THE DOG NOSE

If you share your life with a dog, I'm sure by now you know how amazing their nose is.

After all they can smell a crumb from 100 paces, run from another room when their food is being prepared and are exceptional at sniffing out stinky stuff on walks.

The dog's nose is an incredible instrument and enables our dogs to view the world through smell. Their nose has two functions breathing and smelling, their nose actually combines different odour profiles to determine exactly where an odour is. Hence why they are so fabulous at scent detection and seeking with their noses.

When sniffing their nose has the ability to move air in and out at the same time, this creates a continuous airflow. Dogs have an organ within the olfactory system that can help detect pheromones that other animals release. This can play an important part in their behaviour.

They have 300 million olfactory receptors compared to our 6 million so K wonder they can detect the equivalent of half a teaspoon of sugar in an Olympic sized swimming pool.

Scentwork is a great activity to do with your dog, there are Scentwork courses and workshops all over the UK that you can attend with your dog. You can both learn skills to enhance your dog's life a sniffing ability. It is such a rewarding activity as it's physically and mentally stimulating and rewarding.

I am a Scentwork UK instructor so please get in touch if you'd like to join a Scentwork course or try a 1-1 session.
